Botox or Dermal Fillers – which is the best option for me?

This is a question that we get asked almost daily here at our surgery.

The continual, almost daily, media exposure of Botox as THE age defying treatment for younger looking skin almost eclipses dermal fillers even entering the thought process of potential patients as a viable skin rejuvenation treatment.

If fact Botox is so ingrained in many of our minds, that we often find ourselves thinking ‘Botox is the only treatment for me’, rather than asking the question ‘is Botox the only treatment for me?’

Well that is the question we hope to answer here. We’ll be taking a closer look at the two treatments by drawing on both their similarities and differences. All of which we hope will clear up any questions, concerns, or preconceptions you may have previously had regarding our skin rejuvenation treatments.

First the undercard. Dermal fillers. Essentially dermal fillers are used to lift any depressions (wrinkles) in the skin. The procedure is a simple one; an injection which uses collagen, hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite to fill out and rejuvenate problem areas, with a fuller, younger appearance. You can almost think of dermal fillers as ‘volumizers’.

More common areas of treatment include frown lines, lip lines, neck and cheek bones. With treatments taking anywhere between 30-45 minutes, and with immediate results that can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months, dermal fillers are popular with both men and women from all ages.

Whereas dermal fillers, are as the name suggests, a wrinkle filler treatment. Botox can be described as a wrinkle reduction technique. The purpose being to temporarily erase or reduce wrinkles, rather than lifting and adding volume.

Both are similar in procedure, with tiny, pain-free injections made under the skin. However patients who have dermal fillers can expect all but immediate results. With Botox results usually take about five days to start to show. Typically these results lasting for 4 to 6 months.

The most significant difference between dermal fillers and Botox is the associated side effects. With Botox, side effects are minimal. Reports of bruising of the treated area and headaches usually subside within a few days post-treatment.

Dermal fillers carry the possibility of more risks and side effects. However it’s worth noting severe side effects are very rare, with moderate side effects usually disappearing within two weeks. These can include allergic reactions, infection, itching and numbness to name just a few.

Side effects within both treatments are rare and all are of course, as is the case with all our treatment plans here at A New You, discussed in thorough detail during any treatment consultation session.

The bottom line between the two treatments is that yes, dermal fillers may produce more long-term results, but these injections also carry more possible side effects than Botox injections.

However side effects shouldn’t be the deciding factor when choosing which treatment is the best for you, the two procedures do treat slightly different problem areas and are usually used in different areas of the face.
