Do You Have a Tech-Neck?

Wrinkles and sagging jowls are not just the results of the ageing process according to latest research – but because we’re all spending so much time bent over a phone, laptop or other portable devices.

A consumer research report conducted by a US insurance company found that Americans check their phones roughly 80 times a day. It also revealed that 31 per cent of respondents felt anxiety when separated from their phones – while a third said they would rather give up sex for a week than go just 24 hours without their device!

The condition dubbed as ‘tech neck’ is increasing among those aged 18-39 as they own an average of three pieces of technological equipment.

Diagnosed by a specific crease just above the collar bone, there is now a range of treatments to help combat the modern day issue which can also include loss of tone.

The vertical wrinkles are caused by keeping the head in the same position over long periods of time, which usually occurs when working with a computer, and also when you sleep.

Unfortunately for those of us who like to stay in contact with our phones or while on our laptops, the neck can show signs of ageing before the rest of the body due to the construction of the skin.

The tissue of the neck is not attached to any bones, and so can be one of the first areas to show the pull of gravity.

So what can be done to combat and reduce necklace lines?

First, start with a good cleansing regime. Treat your neck the same as you do the skin on your face – using your products down to the neck and chest to remove dirt and toxins.

Next, exfoliate once a week to encourage cell renewal, remove dead skin and freshen the

It is also important to find a serum specific to the neck, rather than just using one meant for your face.  This is because the skin on the neck is fragile and ordinary creams could pull and drag the skin, creating more creasing and sagging.

Use sunscreen. Protect that neck and take your face sunscreen down to your neck. It should be at least SPF 30 and you should use it every day.

Move your computer and try to place it higher up on your desk, so you’re not looking down at it all day. Same goes for your phone or tablet – hold it up so the neck isn’t creased.

Treatments are available

There are also a number of treatments available at A New You Clinic in Brighton that can help combat the tech-neck.

Micro-needling is popular, or the use of neurotoxins, such as Botox, helps to eradicate the appearance of lines. A very small dose of hyaluronic acid filler injected into the ‘tech neck’ can plump and fill the line with results lasting for about a year.

HIFU – High-Intensity Frequency Ultrasound – can also be used to tighten and smooth the neck area and is a popular choice among the increasing numbers seeking help with this specific problem.
