Vaginal Reshaping (Labiaplasty)

The science bit

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty, often called vaginal reshaping, is a surgical procedure designed to correct and define the appearance of the inner or outer labia, the Labia Minora or Labia Major, the flap of skin that sits either side of the vagina.

It is natural and normal for a woman to have noticeable skin folds around her vaginal opening and, in most cases, this shouldn’t cause any problems. In some cases however labia can cause pain and discomfort during sex, cycling or even walking.

Labiaplasty improves the way your vagina looks and feels, and can also have dramatic results in terms of restoring your confidence and self-esteem.

Whatever your reason for enquiring about vaginal reshaping treatment, Labiaplasty is a viable, safe and increasingly common procedure.

What Can I Expect from a Labiaplasty?

Labia protect the delicate internal areas of the vagina, and we never, ever completely remove them. The purpose of the surgery is to reduce the labia minora by removing unwanted tissue to create a neater appearance.

Labiaplasty is usually performed as a day-case, under either local or general anaesthetic. It depends on what your surgeon advises. The surgery itself takes no longer than an hour.

What Are the Side Effects of Labiaplasty?

This is surgery to a very sensitive area. Post-surgery you will experience minor discomfort, and minor swelling and bruising are not uncommon. You can treat this with medication, and you might also see some minor bleeding or spotting during the recovery period.

What’s the Recovery Time?

You can expect to make a full recovery within two to four weeks, and you must abstain from sexual intercourse for six weeks after the procedure. You need to avoid exercise for four weeks.

It’s important to wear loose underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing during the recovery period, because it can cause soreness. We recommend taking a week off work immediately after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Labiaplasty Safe?
This procedure only involves excess skin, so doesn’t have any long-term effects on your sex life. You can expect some numbness during the healing phase but full sensation will return in due course.
Are There Any Alternatives?
In some circumstances, if there isn’t too much excess skin to remove, you can have Radio-Frequency Treatment. It involves applying heat to the external labia to shrink the skin and make it look smaller and neater. This procedure is usually a course of treatments and you’ll need to have a top up every four to six months.
How Will I Feel?
Once the healing process is complete, you can feel more confident during intimate times with your partner. It can also make sports like horse-riding and cycling more comfortable.
