What Is the Allurion Gastric Balloon?
The Allurion Balloon, previously known as the 'Elipse', is the world's first and only gastric balloon that doesn't require surgery, endoscopy* or anaesthesia for balloon placement and removal. Instead, the weight-loss balloon is provided as a swallowable pill. Once the balloon pill is swallowed, it expands in your stomach to help you cut cravings and kickstart your weight-loss journey.
The Allurion Balloon is a safe and non-permanent solution. It stays in your stomach for approximately 16 weeks, but the treatment is offered as part of a 12-month programme. During this time, our expert nutritionists will support your personalised nutrition and lifestyle plan, helping you readjust your mindset towards food to sustain your weight loss, for your long-term health.
How Does the Allurion Gastric Balloon Work?
When the Allurion Balloon expands in your stomach, it reduces hunger and cravings, and makes you feel fuller more quickly. This helps to break the habit of snacking throughout the day and encourages smaller portions at mealtimes. As you will be eating less, the weight will naturally fall off.
You'll be working with a nutritionist to ensure that your body is getting the nutrients it needs to be strong and form healthy eating habits.
What Does the Treatment Involve?
During the procedure, you'll swallow the pill under the guidance of our healthcare professionals, without anaesthesia or endoscopy. The balloon is then inflated in your stomach, filled with water and checked using quick x-rays. The entire treatment takes around 15 minutes.
Who is the Allurion Balloon Suitable For?
The Allurion Gastric Balloon Pill is suitable for people with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 27 or higher, who have tried dieting with little success. It is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18 or women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
When Will I See the Results?
Patients on the Allurion Programme lose an average of 10-15% of their total body weight in just 16 weeks. You may notice that you look and feel different even sooner.
How Is the Balloon Removed?
After approximately 16 weeks, the pill balloon degrades and leaves your body naturally*.
*In rare cases, the Allurion Balloon may require endoscopic or surgical intervention for removal.
